About
Aoife's journey into outdoor recreation began in 2010 while volunteering with an elderly care programme in Roscommon. She wasn't working in recreation at the time — she was helping out because a friend needed support. But something shifted when she saw the change in the older adults after a simple walk through local green spaces. They were calmer. More engaged. Asking to come back. That observation sparked something. She decided to make it her career.
She completed her degree in Environmental Health and Leisure Studies at the University of Limerick in 2010. The timing worked out perfectly — she went straight into a role with Roscommon County Council's Parks and Recreation Department. Her first big project? Improving accessibility at Lough Key Forest Park. It wasn't glamorous work. Trail assessments, surface composition studies, rest point placement audits. But it mattered. She spent three years on that project alone, working closely with occupational therapists to understand what actually makes a walk sustainable for someone with limited mobility or stamina.
Over fourteen years, she's moved beyond just designing trails. She's developed entire frameworks for nature engagement — programs that work with senior centres, retirement communities, and individual visitors. Her approach isn't theoretical. She actually walks the trails with people. She sits at rest points. She watches where visitors struggle and where they linger. She's learned that age doesn't limit forest exploration — but poor planning does. Now she works with arabicafriend Ltd, bringing that hands-on knowledge to broader audiences across Ireland.
Aoife's expertise spans accessibility standards, trail design principles, nature-based wellness outcomes, and the practical logistics of outdoor programming for older adults. She's particularly passionate about demystifying outdoor activity — proving that a 75-year-old can absolutely enjoy a forest walk if the environment is designed thoughtfully. She understands pacing. She understands rest point placement. She knows seasonal wildlife patterns and what visitors will actually see. Most importantly, she gets that nature connection isn't a luxury for older adults — it's restorative. It's about independence, confidence, and genuine wellbeing.
